Job Description

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) Healthcare-Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program oversees public health surveillance and response to infections associated with healthcare facilities, including infections with multidrug-resistant organisms, contaminated medications, healthcare procedures, and devices.  The HAI/AR Program also conducts educational activities to prevent and control the emergence of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance in Philadelphia.  The HAI/AR Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as a Surveillance and Prevention Assistant to assist with PDPH’s drug-resistant organism surveillance and response activities and support other programmatic activities as needed.

The Surveillance and Prevention Assistant will work on a team to track cases of carbapenem-resistant Enterobactericeae (CRE) in Philadelphia by entering reports in a database and following up with healthcare facilities when necessary. This position will also support ongoing projects within the program related to education and outreach at healthcare facilities as well as coordination with the state health department and other public health partners.

This position is a part of the Division of Disease Control and is full-time, Monday through Friday, with occasional work after hours and on weekends to support Program activities. The position is grant funded for a minimum of one year. Continuation of the position is dependent on sustained grant funding.

Specific Duties:

  • Enter case reports from Philadelphia-area healthcare facilities for carbapenem-resistant Enterobactericeae (CRE) and other drug-resistant organisms into the Communicable Disease Management System (CDMS) database so the HAI/AR program, in conjunction with the Epidemiology program, can track and analyze cases to identify outbreaks and incidents of interest
  • Communicate with infection preventionists and clinical laboratories to arrange additional laboratory testing of drug-resistant organisms and communicate results when necessary
  • Maintain and update HAI/AR Program’s healthcare facility contact lists and databases to support educational activities and enable the HAI/AR program to continue to share resources, provide leadership and expand our network
  • Support outreach activities by creating educational materials, coordinating training and meeting logistics, and participating in PDPH, PA DOH and HAI/AR Program meetings and seminars
  • Support outbreak investigations, public health responses and other HAI/AR program activities as needed
  • Participate in emergency response exercises and real events at the discretion of the HAI/AR manager and Disease Control Director

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a science oriented field from an accredited college or university with an interest in public health
  • Public Health experience conducting surveillance activities is preferred
  • Experience in infection prevention and control, or related training and education, is preferred
  • Training in applied epidemiology and statistical analysis is preferred
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications is required
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and interdisciplinary, hands-on work in healthcare settings
  • Able to work independently and in teams to establish and convene meetings, prepare summary reports and present findings
  • Flexibility, professionalism and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are highly valued attributes

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • This job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position may require some travel and occasional participation in off-site functions.

Supervision:

  • This position reports directly to the Manager of the HAI/AR Program in the Division of Disease Control

Salary and Benefits:

  • Compensation is hourly and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position comes with a generous benefits package including health, dental, retirement, vacation, sick and personal leave days with pay.
