Job Description

This position would be appropriate to a candidate who has a strong background in nutrition and public health, together with a demonstrated ability in social marketing.  The candidate should also possess experience in managing information and conducting marketing campaigns that involve multiple strategies to inform a target audience.  A Master’s Degree is preferred in nutrition or public health/policy combined with at least five years of relevant experience.  Preferred candidates should possess research, program development, social media and evaluation skills.  Preferred candidates will also have positive human relations skills and be an effective communicator. The Executive Director reports to the PANEN Board Chair and the Managing Director, Health Promotion Services.

Responsibilities:

Organizational & Administrative

  • Develop and implement communication strategies internal to the Network that maximize the effectiveness of the PA NEN, Network committees and staff.
  • Maintain regular feedback to the constituent interests of the PA NEN and reporting to the PA NEN Board and to the Public Health Management Corporation.
  • Engage and encourage the PA NEN membership in supporting activities of PA NEN staff.
  • Assist the PA NEN Board to expand nutrition programming through the conceptualization and development of new PA NEN initiatives.
  • Manage PA NEN staff team and oversee committee work of other team members.
  • Oversee the development and preparation of the annual work plan for the PA NEN in cooperation with the PA NEN Board.
  • Ensure compliance with PA NEN contractual obligations.
  • Conduct trainings, staff meetings and perform other work-related duties as required.
  • Assist with PA NEN Board development.
  • Assist Board Chair/Co-chairs with annual report to the PA NEN membership
  • Report preparation and timely submission.

Develop social marketing strategies

  • In conjunction with the PA NEN Board and the Social Marketing Sub-committee, develop nutrition education messages and delivery systems.
  • Work with PA NEN staff to ensure a regular flow of coherent and targeted messages to the SNAP-Ed eligible audience.
  • Support outside research related to nutrition education by facilitating communication between researchers, practitioners and consumers.
  • Engage and encourage participation of SNAP-Ed partners, food banks and food pantries and Community Health agencies in the PA NEN social marketing campaign, “Eat Together PA”.

 Fiscal Management

  • Create and manage agency budget.
  • Oversee allocation and management of fundraising proceeds.
  • Oversee all fiscal and program audits.
  • Work with fiscal agent to ensure contractual compliance.
  • Ensure timely fiscal invoice submission.

 Public Communications.

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the PA NEN.
  • Raise the PA NEN public profile through the creation and publication of print and electronic communications that convey quality and professionalism and will attract nutrition and health professionals and practitioners to the Network.
  • Represent the PA NEN in public forums and private meetings where the course of nutrition education in Pennsylvania is being shaped.
  • Seek opportunities to stimulate public interest in healthful nutrition through relationships with nutrition professionals, public officials, the media and other opinion-leaders.
  • Engage the academic community in encouraging the participation of young professionals in PA NEN membership and committee participation.
  • Increase policymaker’s awareness of PA NEN and the value of nutrition education programming.

  • Demonstrated experience in team-oriented goal setting and implementation.
  • Experience with low-income programs and participants.
  • Demonstrated solid verbal presentation and writing skills. Writing sample required.
  • Experience with remote staff management.
  • Knowledge of USDA nutrition policies.
  • Experience with the Policies, Systems and Environmental change approaches utilized in the SNAP-Ed program.
  • Grant writing and fundraising development experience preferred.
  • Experience with educating policy makers.
  • Experience in staff development.
  • Knowledge of database operations.
  • Experience in strategic planning.
  • Competence in non-profit financial management.
  • Clearance of required Federal and State background checks.
  • Good technical skills including Microsoft Office programs, familiarity with web site development and internet communications, and current knowledge of marketing and presentation tools.
  • Motivation by the potential of nutrition education to improve life for food insecure households.
  • Willingness to engage in frequent overnight travel using own vehicle (reimbursable travel costs).
  • Ability to work with people of varied ethnic, educational and professional backgrounds.

Experience:

  • Five or more years’ experience

Education Requirement:

  • Master’s degree preferred in nutrition or public health/ public health policy with at least five years of experience.

Salary:
