The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) Healthcare-Associated Infections/Antimicrobial Resistance (HAI/AR) Program oversees public health surveillance and response to infections associated with the healthcare setting, including infections with multidrug-resistant organisms, contaminated medications, healthcare procedures, and devices.  The HAI/AR Program also conducts educational activities to prevent and control the emergence of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance in Philadelphia.  The HAI/AR Program seeks a qualified individual to serve as an Infection Prevention Nurse (RN) to assist with PDPH’s efforts to reduce infections associated with the healthcare setting in Philadelphia.

The Infection Prevention Nurse will work on a team that conducts site visits to healthcare facilities, deciphers and disseminates guidance on best infection control practices and works with Infection Preventionists (IP) at healthcare facilities to improve their programs and implement policies and protocol. Additionally, the Infection Prevention Nurse will work with healthcare facilities and other congregate settings to prevent and contain outbreaks of COVID-19 and other communicable diseases.  

This position is a part of the Division of Disease Control and is full-time, Monday through Friday. Occasional work after hours and on weekends may be required to support program activities. The position is grant funded for a minimum of one year. Continuation of the position is dependent on sustained grant funding.

Specific Duties: 

  • Conduct surveillance and response activities, including case and contact investigation primarily focusing on, but not limited to, COVID-19 in healthcare facilities (HCF)
  • Use the Division’s Communicable Disease Management System (CDMS) and other databases (REDCap, Access, PA-NEDSS) to track and analyze cases of healthcare-associated infections and facilities’ statuses
  • Reach out to HCF to provide infection prevention guidance based on CDC recommendations
  • Conduct onsite and remote site visits to assess HCF infection prevention capacity and provide feedback to facilities both verbally and in written format
  • Assist HCF IPs to evaluate and modify their surveillance plans, response strategies, and infection control policies and protocols
  • Work with HCF to understand their own data and overcome internal barriers to implementing best infection control practices
  • Develop materials, conduct educational programs and presentations for large audiences and in-services at HCF
  • Conduct COVID-19 testing and administer vaccine to patients and staff in congregate settings as needed

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or a related healthcare field required (non-clinical candidate with strong qualifications may be considered)
  • Master’s degree in Public Health or related field preferred
  • Experience in assessing infection control practices and conducting related training and education for healthcare professionals preferred
  • Certification in Infection Control (CIC) preferred
  • Enthusiasm for teamwork and interdisciplinary, hands-on work in healthcare settings
  • Flexibility with changing of duties during the pandemic response
  • Excellent English language skills, including composition, grammar, and public speaking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Able to work independently and in teams to establish and convene meetings, prepare summary reports and present finding
  • Training in applied epidemiology and statistical analysis is preferred
  • Research experience preferred, including publishing or presenting scientific manuscripts and reports.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: 

  • This job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position may require some travel and occasional participation in off-site functions. 

Supervision: 

  • This position reports directly to the Manager of the HAI/AR Program in the Division of Disease Control.
