AmeriCorps VISTA is a one-year national service term program where members turn their efforts toward building capacity and sustainability of local organizations. The idea behind VISTA is to strengthen organizations to serve the needs of the community long after the service term is over, therefore, many VISTA assignments focus on fundraising, research, volunteer recruitment, and other activities which provide initiative for long-term success. NNCC is the sponsoring organization for AmeriCorps VISTA, placing members with partner organizations around Philadelphia, PA.

The VISTA will develop a comprehensive and integrated network of program recruitment, delivery, referral partners, and implement best practices for engaging low-income residents in vulnerable sections of Philadelphia. Targeted subpopulations will include African-Americans and other minorities with specific program goals around chronic disease self-management education, program enrollment and retention for the prevention and management of chronic disease, arthritis, and chronic pain. The VISTA will expand partnerships to reach more diverse populations in effort to identify better approaches to assist individuals in achieving optimal health outcomes. Must be 18+ years old for eligibility. Start date of October 25, 2021.


  • Track and report the outcomes of implementing best practice locations and impact upon participant enrollment and retention to share at meetings, conferences and with sustainability partners.
  • Establish an effective communication system between health care providers, patients/attendees, and program delivery team to efficiently allow Health Promotion Council (HPC) to offer programming at health centers and other community-based partner sites.
  • Establish a timeline for conducting outreach and recruiting community participants for programs to ensure maximum enrollment and retention for completion of the prevention and/or management program.
  • Research best practices and successes from guided peer-based problem solving for a wide array of issues to develop manual on communities to improve their health or ability to manage their health.
  • Develop database of community members previously trained in the program to deliver self-management education programs to their peer group.

Preferred but not required:

  • Previous marketing and advertising and/or community outreach experience
  • Relationship building with internal and external partners
  • Database development and management

Education Requirement:

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • College graduate preferred


  • AmeriCorps living stipend based on Philadelphia County
