Job Description

This is a fulltime position in the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), Division of Disease Control – Tuberculosis Control Program. This position reports to the Tuberculosis Control Program Administrator. The Surveillance Coordinator works together with other staff to coordinate all the different activities of the Tuberculosis Program in order to achieve the ultimate goal of caring for tuberculosis patients and monitoring the epidemiology of tuberculosis in Philadelphia. This position also collaborates with the Center for Disease Control, Pennsylvania Department of Health, outside agencies and other jurisdictions.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversees data collection, ensures data cleaning and accuracy and conducts analyses
  • Conducts epidemiologic analysis to identify clusters of tuberculosis, follow outbreaks, track exposures and determine any significant change in TB incidence
  • Works closely with tuberculosis field staff and clinic staff to follow patient characteristics, drug resistance, treatment, and potential exposures
  • Participates in providing tuberculosis epidemiology consultation to hospital infectious disease control personnel on an ad-hoc basis to educate them in the risk of tuberculosis transmission and infection control efforts 
  • Prepares epidemiologic report on Tuberculosis morbidity in Philadelphia
  • Oversees reporting of tuberculosis morbidity and mortality to CDC
  • Oversees program evaluation activities including quarterly Cohort Review of tuberculosis cases
  • Coordinates planning of internal staff education and training
  • Coordinates planning and execution of TB education for community partners, including health professionals, hospitals, healthcare facilities etc.
  • Serves as Program Evaluation Focal Point representing Philadelphia Tuberculosis Control Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Tuberculosis Elimination Program Evaluation Network
  • Coordinates and executes all program evaluation activities as required by CDC
  • Participates in the writing and submission of the Federal Cooperative Agreement Grant and the Annual Performance Reports for each funding cycle for Tuberculosis Control activities in Philadelphia
  • Maintains Human Subjects Research credentials for the TB control program and organizes and coordinates all Institutional Review Board submissions, for both internal and to external organizations
  • Attends required Tuberculosis related conferences and meetings per Cooperative Agreement Requirements as the Education and Training Focal Point
  • Collaborates with the State Health Department and State Tuberculosis Control as well as other jurisdictions
  • Prepares periodic reports on program achievements and progress
  • Prepares comprehensive annual report of the program’s achievements and short comings
  • Participates in tuberculosis research conducted by the TB Program Manager and Medical Directors and helps in writing reports
  • Prepares reports and makes presentation(s) at local, state and national conferences
  • Facilitates collaboration with other Programs of Division of Disease Control and other City Departments
  • Participates in Emergency Trainings and Exercises as needed
  • Be trained as a member of the Public Health Response Team
  • Help with other responsibilities as required

Education Requirement:

  • Master of Public Health, Master of Health Administration or related fields required.

Skills:

  • Experience with data management, SAS
  • An understanding of data protections and security as it pertains to health-related patient information
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including slide preparation, presentation and attention to detail with punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Able to work independently and successfully in a team.
  • Highly organized and motivated.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one year experience working in public health or private organization, dealing with data, programmatic evaluation and reporting.

Salary:

  • Starting at $55,000; commensurate with education and experience.
