Job Description

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) is seeking a full time Data Manager to ensure accuracy and timeliness of disease reports to facilitate investigation and implementation of disease control measures. This is a great opportunity for a motivated young professional to gain work experience in a robust large urban health department.  This position functions as part of the Epidemiology Unit of the Division of Disease Control (DDC) which is comprised of several program areas including Acute Communicable Diseases, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Immunizations, Healthcare Associated Infections, Bioterrorism and Public Health Emergency Preparedness, Tuberculosis Control, and Viral Hepatitis.  The DDC is responsible for the surveillance and control of reportable communicable diseases or conditions in Philadelphia County.  The Epidemiology Unit provides support to all Division programs, including activities such as program data review, management, and analysis; assurance of data quality, creation of reports, and interpretation of data analysis for the program areas. 

Organizational Structure/Supervision:

The Epidemiology Unit provides support to all Division programs. This position will report to the Epidemiology Unit Program Manager. Program staff may include federal, state, City, and/or contract staff.

Responsibilities

The person filling this position must work closely with multiple program areas and Epidemiology staff in processing disease and immunization reports accessed from a variety of electronic data systems. The data manager will also be responsible for periodic data cleaning as well as general trend analyses. An ideal candidate should be dependable, detail-oriented, possess strong quantitative skills, and have advanced computer skills with the potential for learning more electronic data management, data cleaning, and data manipulation using statistical software.

Employee is responsible for:

  • Managing collected data:
    • Intake of disease/condition reports from multiple sources to ensure completeness and accuracy.
    • Regular assessment and cleaning of surveillance databases to assure the completeness, timeliness and accuracy of entered data.
  • Aiding the Informatics Specialist with the implementation of electronic laboratory reporting (ELR).
  • Communicating with clinical laboratories regarding reporting of notifiable conditions.
  • Develop materials (forms, data dictionaries, letters, and training materials) for surveillance databases.
  • Extracting data from surveillance databases for use by program staff.
  • Designing and performing data analysis on specific analytic projects.
  • Managing and coordinating the production of large-format presentation posters.
  • May be asked to provide support in other program areas, including Emergency Preparedness activities, as needed to meet the goals of the Division.

Experience:

  • One year of work or educational experience requiring data management and/or data analysis preferred
  • Experience with data management software (MS Access, MS Excel)
  • Experience using SAS software or other statistical software is preferred

Education

Completion of Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public health, statistics, computer science, or another health science at an accredited university

Salary:

  • $39,000-$41,000
