Job Description

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness Program (BT-PHP), located within the Division of Disease Control, is the lead administrative and planning agency for public health emergency preparedness and response in the City of Philadelphia. BT-PHP is responsible for establishing local public health preparedness priorities, developing and testing response plans, coordinating with local, state, and federal partners, and managing the public health response to real events. Due to the complex and resource-intensive nature of public health emergencies, extensive planning is needed to ensure that the City is prepared to respond effectively.

The Health Education Coordinator is responsible for managing BT-PHP’s health education initiatives and outreach, particularly regarding the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). This includes planning, coordinating, and facilitating events for a wide range of audiences, such as organizational partners and community members. This position was created to strengthen the capacity of PDPH to provide community education opportunities on how to prepare for and respond to COVID-19. The Health Education Coordinator will work in collaboration with BT-PHP and Division of Disease Control staff to ensure that trainings and event requests are fulfilled.

This position is Monday through Friday, with occasional work after hours and on weekends to support Program activities. The position is grant funded for a minimum of one year. Continuation of the position is dependent on sustained grant funding.

Specific Duties:

  • Manage the Bioterrorism & Public Health Preparedness Program’s COVID-19 health education initiatives
    • Identify educational and training needs to support local public health preparedness for COVID-19
    • Coordinate the development of health education curriculum, coordination and scheduling of events, and registration of participants
    • Support the design and execution of COVID-19 health education initiatives, including developing objectives, producing materials, and engaging staff and stakeholders, to support personal, community, and organizational preparedness
    • Maintain a current awareness of the evolving COVID-19 public health emergency and latest developments in emergency preparedness and response
  • Ensure timely scheduling of trainings and events
    • Coordinate COVID-19 education event requests
    • Schedule appropriate PDPH staff to facilitate and present at events
    • Maintain a database to organize and track COVID-19 education events
  • Collaborate with or assist other BT-PHP team members with priority projects and be willing to take on other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public health with at least one year of work experience in a public health or emergency management setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of Incident Command System, state and local government is preferred
  • Project management in a health-related field and experience with training and exercise development
  • Comfortable coordinating event requests, leading meetings and trainings, and independently developing educational materials
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to organize and present information effectively
  • Candidates should have strong critical thinking skills, excellent English language skills, including composition, grammar, and public speaking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Flexibility, professionalism and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are highly valued attributes

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

  • This job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of less than 50 pounds and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50 to 75 percent of the time. The position may require some travel and occasional participation in off-site functions.  The position requires responding to public health emergencies and at times requires rapid turnaround of communications on short notice.

Supervision:

  • This position reports directly to the Program Manager of the Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness Program.
